Quick answer

A Google Business Profile (GBP) is the free listing that shows your shop on Google Maps and in Google Search. To make it work for you, claim and verify it, pick the most accurate primary category, fill every field (hours, phone, services, description, attributes), add real photos every week, post regularly, and collect and reply to reviews. Google ranks local results on three things: relevance, distance and prominence — everything in this guide improves relevance and prominence.

When someone in India searches "sweet shop near me", "best dentist in Vadodara" or "AC repair Andheri", the first thing they see is usually not a website. It is the map pack: three businesses with stars, photos, hours and a Call button. Those three listings come from Google Business Profile. For most local businesses, this free profile now brings more calls and walk-ins than any website or paid ad.

This guide covers the whole journey — from creating the profile to ranking at the top — in plain language. Bookmark it; every section links to a deeper guide.

What is a Google Business Profile?

A Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is your business's public page on Google. It powers:

  • Google Maps — your pin, directions, photos and reviews.
  • The local pack in Google Search — the three-business box under the map.
  • Your knowledge panel — the large panel on the right (desktop) or top (mobile) when someone searches your name.
  • AI answers — Google's Gemini-powered Ask Maps (launched in India in March 2026) and AI Mode read your profile, reviews and website to recommend businesses in conversation.

It is free. There is no paid way to rank higher inside the organic map results; you earn the position.

How Google decides who ranks first

Google officially says local results are based on three factors (Google support):

Factor What it means What you control
Relevance How well your profile matches what was searched Categories, services, description, posts, photos, website
Distance How far you are from the searcher (or the place in the search) Accurate address and map pin
Prominence How well known and trusted you are Reviews, rating, photos, citations, links, overall activity

Independent surveys of local SEO experts — most notably Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors — consistently put the primary category, proximity, your real business name, being open at the time of search, high star ratings and review quantity near the top. Treat these as informed expert opinion, not Google's confirmed formula. Our full breakdown is in How to rank #1 on Google Maps.

Step 1: Create or claim your profile

  1. Open business.google.com and sign in with a Google account you will keep long term (not a staff member's personal email).
  2. Search for your business. If it already exists — customers often create listings — click Claim this business.
  3. If it does not exist, choose Add your business and enter the name exactly as it appears on your signboard.
  4. Choose a primary category (more on this below).
  5. Add your address if customers visit you. If you serve customers at their place (plumber, electrician, home tutor), hide the address and set a service area instead.
  6. Add your phone number and website.

Tip for India: use the same phone number you print on bills and your shop board. Consistency across the internet builds Google's trust.

Step 2: Verify the profile

An unverified profile does not show reliably on Maps and cannot be fully edited. Google chooses the verification method — commonly a video recording (show your signboard, the street, the inside of the shop and proof of management like keys or a billing counter), sometimes phone/SMS or email. Postcards are now rare in India.

Read How to verify your Google Business Profile in India for a shot-by-shot video checklist — rejected videos are the #1 reason verification fails.

Step 3: Choose the right categories

Your primary category is widely considered the single strongest on-profile ranking factor. Pick the most specific category that describes what you mainly are, not everything you do:

  • A sweet shop: "Sweet shop" or "Indian sweets shop", not "Store".
  • A dental clinic: "Dentist" or "Dental clinic", not "Medical clinic".
  • A unisex salon: "Beauty salon" or "Hair salon" depending on the main service.

Then add 3–5 secondary categories only for things you genuinely offer (e.g. a sweet shop with a namkeen counter can add "Snack bar" only if it sells snacks to eat on the spot). Unrelated categories confuse Google and can hurt. See the category guide and Chamko's built-in Category advisor.

Step 4: Complete every field

Incomplete profiles lose to complete ones. Fill in:

Field Best practice
Business name Exactly your real-world name. No city or keywords added (that violates Google's guidelines and risks suspension).
Description 600–750 characters. What you sell, who it is for, where you are. Natural language, no phone numbers or links. Examples.
Hours Accurate regular hours plus special hours for festivals and holidays. "Open now" is a ranking and click factor.
Phone A number that is answered during business hours. Add WhatsApp as a contact option where available.
Website Your site, or a simple page. Use a tracking link (UTM) to measure Google traffic.
Services / products List every service with a short description. Each one is another search you can match.
Attributes Payment options (UPI, cards), accessibility, women-led, amenities, etc.
Opening date Helps Google understand you are established.

Step 5: Photos — the most underrated lever

Profiles with many recent photos get more direction requests and calls. Google recommends JPG or PNG between 10 KB and 5 MB, ideally 720×720 px (Google photo guidelines).

Upload at least:

  1. Logo and cover photo
  2. 3+ exterior photos (day and evening, signboard visible) — they help customers find you
  3. 3+ interior photos
  4. Your best products or services
  5. Team at work
  6. Happy customers (with permission)

Then add new photos every week. Freshness signals an active business. Full playbook: Google Business Profile photos guide.

Step 6: Reviews — quantity, freshness, rating and replies

Reviews influence both ranking and whether people choose you. What matters:

  • Quantity compared with nearby competitors.
  • Velocity — a steady flow of new reviews every month beats a burst last year.
  • Rating — 4.3★ and above is where trust kicks in.
  • Replies — reply to every review, positive and negative, ideally within 24 hours.

Never buy reviews, offer discounts for reviews or ask only happy customers (review gating). Google can remove reviews and restrict your profile — including blocking new reviews and showing a public warning (Google support). Read How to get more Google reviews (the safe way) and the 2026 review policy explained.

Step 7: Post every week

Google Posts appear on your profile and show you are active. Post offers, new products, festival greetings, tips and behind-the-scenes. Keep text under 1,500 characters, add a real photo and a clear call to action. Posts expire from the main view after a while, so consistency matters more than any single post. See the posts guide.

Step 8: Build trust outside Google

Google cross-checks your name, address and phone (NAP) across the web. List your business with identical details on Justdial, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook, Instagram, IndiaMART, Sulekha and industry sites (Zomato, Practo, Urban Company…). Link your profile to a website with your NAP and LocalBusiness schema. Details: NAP and citations for Indian businesses.

Ask Maps and AI Mode answer questions like "a sweet shop near me that is open late and has sugar-free options". They read your categories, attributes, description, review text and website. The Q&A section was discontinued in late 2025, so answer common questions on your website and in your description instead. See AI search for local businesses.

Step 10: Measure and repeat

Check Performance in your profile monthly: searches, views, calls, direction requests and website clicks. Track your profile score and next steps. Chamko emails a monthly PDF report on the 1st of every month so you never have to dig through dashboards.

Your weekly routine (15 minutes)

Day Task
Monday Publish one post with a fresh photo
Wednesday Upload 2–3 new photos
Daily Reply to new reviews
Saturday Share your review link with that week's happy customers
Monthly Check performance, update hours for upcoming festivals

Or let Chamko do all of it automatically — daily posts in branded designs, replies in the customer's language, fresh photos and a 26-point Rank 1 plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free in India?

Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a profile is completely free. Be careful of anyone who calls claiming you must pay Google to "verify" or "rank" your listing — Google does not charge for this.

How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?

New or newly optimised profiles typically see movement within 4–12 weeks, depending on competition in your area and category. Consistent weekly activity (photos, posts, reviews) matters more than one big update.

Can I add keywords to my business name?

No. Your business name must match your real-world name. Adding a city or service ("Sharma Sweets Best Mithai Indore") violates Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended.

Do I need a website to rank?

Not strictly, but a website linked to your profile helps relevance and gives AI search more trusted information about you. Even a simple one-page site with your name, address, phone, services and hours helps.

What replaced the Q&A section?

Google discontinued the public Q&A feature in late 2025. AI features now answer customer questions using your profile, reviews and website, so keep those complete and accurate.
