Quick answer
Your Business Profile name must match your real-world name as used on your signboard, website, stationery and registrations. Don't add cities, services, taglines, phone numbers or special characters. Keywords are only acceptable when they are genuinely part of your registered and displayed brand name.
Quick answer: Your Business Profile name must match your real-world name as used on your signboard, website, stationery and registrations. Don't add cities, services, taglines, phone numbers or special characters. Keywords are only acceptable when they are genuinely part of your registered and displayed brand name.
Keywords in the business title are one of the strongest ranking signals according to expert surveys — which is exactly why it is so abused, and why Google suspends profiles that do it.
Not allowed
| Bad example | Why |
|---|---|
| "Sharma Sweets – Best Mithai Shop in Indore" | Adds service and location keywords |
| "Smile Dental Clinic Root Canal Implants" | Adds services |
| "Glow Salon ☎ 98765 43210" | Phone number |
| "CHEAPEST AC REPAIR" | Marketing tagline, all caps |
| "Iron Fit Gym (Open 24x7)" | Hours or status |
Allowed
- Your exact brand: "Sharma Sweets"
- Legal or widely used name: "Sharma Sweets & Namkeen" if that is on your signboard and bills
- Branch descriptor only when it is part of real branding
Want a keyword in your name legitimately?
If you are launching a new business or rebranding, you can choose a name that includes what you do ("Sharma Mithai Bhandar"). Change the signboard, website, bills and registrations first; then update Google. Expect re-verification.
What to do if competitors stuff keywords
Report it with Suggest an edit and the real-world name. See how to report fake listings.
Examples: allowed vs not allowed
| Signboard name | ❌ Not allowed on Google | ✅ Allowed |
|---|---|---|
| Sharma Sweets | Sharma Sweets – Best Sweet Shop in Indore | Sharma Sweets |
| Dr. Mehta's Dental Care | Dr. Mehta Dentist Root Canal Implant Ahmedabad | Dr. Mehta's Dental Care |
| Om Electricals | Om Electricals 24x7 Call 98xxxxxxx | Om Electricals |
| Café Brew (inside Phoenix Mall) | Café Brew Best Coffee Lower Parel | Café Brew |
If your branding genuinely includes a word (your signboard, GST registration and bills all say "Om Electricals & AC Repair"), you can use it — the rule is that the Google name must match your real-world name.
Why it matters for ranking
Keyword-stuffed names may rank briefly, but they are one of the most common reasons profiles get suspended after a competitor or Google reviewer reports them. A suspension wipes out your visibility — and appeals take time. A clean name plus a strong category, description and reviews is the safer long-term path.
Changing your name properly
If you rebrand, change the signboard, bills and website first, then update Google. Expect a re-verification. Keep photos of the new signboard ready to upload as proof.
Frequently asked questions
Will adding my city help me rank?
It might briefly, but it violates guidelines and can lead to suspension — not worth the risk.
Can I use a different name on Google than on my board?
No. Consistency between the real world and Google is required.
My registered name is different from my shop name. Which one do I use?
Use the name customers see and know — the signboard name — and keep it consistent everywhere.
