Quick answer
Ask every customer — not just happy ones — at the moment they are most satisfied, make it effortless with a direct review link and a QR code at the counter, follow up once on WhatsApp, and reply to every review. Never offer discounts or gifts for reviews, never write or buy reviews, and do not tell customers what to write. Aim for a steady flow of new reviews every month rather than a one-time burst.
Quick answer: Ask every customer — not just happy ones — at the moment they are most satisfied, make it effortless with a direct review link and a QR code at the counter, follow up once on WhatsApp, and reply to every review. Never offer discounts or gifts for reviews, never write or buy reviews, and do not tell customers what to write. Aim for a steady flow of new reviews every month rather than a one-time burst.
Reviews are the most visible trust signal on your profile and a major ranking factor. Customers in India read star ratings and the latest reviews before calling or visiting. A business with 300 reviews at 4.6★ beats one with 40 reviews at 4.9★ in most decisions.
Why steady reviews matter more than many reviews
Two things matter beyond your total count:
- Velocity — new reviews arriving every month show Google your business is active today.
- Recency — customers trust reviews from this month far more than reviews from 2022.
Experts consistently list review quantity and high ratings among the top local ranking factors (Whitespark 2026).
Step 1: Get your review link
- Open your Business Profile (search your business name on Google while signed in, or business.google.com).
- Click Ask for reviews (or Get more reviews).
- Copy the short link (looks like
g.page/r/…/review).
Save it in Chamko (Reviews → Get more reviews) — it creates your QR code poster and WhatsApp message automatically.
Step 2: Make asking a habit at the right moment
The best moment is right after a positive experience:
| Business | Best moment |
|---|---|
| Sweet shop / restaurant | While packing the order or at billing |
| Salon / spa | When the customer sees the final look in the mirror |
| Clinic | At the follow-up visit when the problem is solved |
| Repair / home service | Right after the job works and payment is done |
| Coaching | After results, or at the end of a batch |
A simple line works: "If you liked our service, a Google review really helps a small business like ours. It takes 30 seconds — just scan this."
Step 3: Put a QR code where customers wait
Print an A4/A5 poster with your QR code and keep it at the billing counter, waiting area or on the table. Chamko generates a print-ready poster with your name and QR (Rank plan → Print poster). Keep it clean: no offers, no "5★ only" wording.
Step 4: Follow up once on WhatsApp
Many customers say yes and forget. Send one friendly WhatsApp message the same evening or the next day with your link. Keep it short, personal and in the customer's language. Chamko writes this message in 10 Indian languages.
Do not send repeated reminders — one polite follow-up is enough.
Step 5: Reply to every review
Replying shows customers you care and that the business is active. Thank positive reviewers by name and mention what they liked; respond calmly to negative ones and offer to fix the issue offline. See How to reply to Google reviews.
What is not allowed (and can get your profile restricted)
Google treats fake and incentivised reviews as serious violations. When it finds a business violated its fake engagement policy, it can remove reviews and restrict the profile — for example, blocking new reviews for a time, unpublishing existing reviews, and showing a public warning (Google).
Avoid:
- Incentives — discounts, free items, lucky draws or cashback in exchange for a review.
- Review gating — asking only customers you expect to be happy, or filtering unhappy ones first.
- Writing reviews yourself or asking staff, family or friends to post fake reviews.
- Buying reviews from agencies or "review packages".
- Scripting content — telling customers what to write, which staff member to mention or which keywords to include. Reports from April 2026 indicate Google treats this as manipulation; a neutral "please share your experience" is safe.
- Review stations — asking customers to post on a device you hand them in the shop.
India's consumer protection framework also targets fake reviews, so these practices carry legal as well as platform risk.
Ideas that work (and are safe)
- Add the review link to your bill/invoice and visiting card.
- Put the QR code on packaging stickers and the table tent.
- Add a "Review us on Google" button to your website and WhatsApp Business catalogue.
- Train staff to ask every customer the same simple way.
- Ask existing loyal customers who have never reviewed you.
How many reviews should you aim for?
Look at the top three businesses for your main search in your area. Aim to beat their total over time and to get at least 4 new reviews every month. Chamko's Rank plan tracks both numbers for you.
Frequently asked questions
Can I give a discount to customers who leave a review?
No. Any incentive in exchange for a review violates Google's policies and can lead to reviews being removed and the profile being restricted.
Is it okay to ask every customer for a review?
Yes. Asking all customers for honest feedback is encouraged. What is not allowed is asking only happy customers or pressuring people.
Can I ask customers to mention a product or staff name?
Avoid it. Ask for an honest review of their experience and let them write freely. Scripted requests risk being treated as review manipulation.
What if a customer does not have a Google account?
They need a Google account (most Android users already have one via Gmail). If they cannot, thank them anyway — never post on their behalf.
How quickly should reviews come in?
A steady, natural flow is best. A sudden spike of dozens of reviews in a day can look suspicious.
