Quick answer

Pick the most specific primary category that describes what your business mainly is (e.g. "Dental clinic", not "Clinic"), then add 3–5 secondary categories only for services you genuinely offer. Check what the top three competitors for your main search use, and never add unrelated categories — an incorrect primary category is one of the strongest negative ranking factors.

Quick answer: Pick the most specific primary category that describes what your business mainly is (e.g. "Dental clinic", not "Clinic"), then add 3–5 secondary categories only for services you genuinely offer. Check what the top three competitors for your main search use, and never add unrelated categories — an incorrect primary category is one of the strongest negative ranking factors.

Categories tell Google what you are. When someone searches "sweet shop near me", Google first finds businesses whose categories match, then ranks them by distance and prominence. If your category is wrong, the best photos and reviews in the city will not help you appear for that search.

Primary vs secondary categories

Primary category Secondary (additional) categories
How many Exactly 1 Up to 9 (use 3–5 in practice)
Weight Strongest Lower, but still helpful
Rule What you mainly are Other things you genuinely offer
Shown to users Yes, under your name Not always shown

Expert surveys rank the primary category as the #1 local pack factor and additional categories in the top ten (Whitespark 2026).

How to choose your primary category

  1. List your top 3 money searches — what customers type to find you ("sweet shop", "kaju katli shop", "mithai near me").
  2. Search them on Google Maps in your area and open the top three results. Their category is shown under the name.
  3. Choose the most specific match for your main revenue source. Specific beats general: "Indian sweets shop" beats "Store"; "Pediatrician" beats "Doctor" if you only treat children.
  4. Use Google's exact category names. You must pick from Google's list; type slowly and read the suggestions.

How to choose secondary categories

Add a secondary category when a meaningful part of your business matches it and customers search for it:

  • A sweet shop that sells namkeen and has a small seating area: Sweet shop (primary) + Snack bar + Bakery (only if it bakes).
  • A salon offering bridal makeup: Beauty salon (primary) + Make-up artist + Bridal shop? — no, only if it sells bridal wear.
  • A dental clinic doing implants and braces: Dentist + Dental implants periodontist + Orthodontist (only if a specialist practises there).

Common category mistakes

  • Choosing a broad category ("Store", "Shop", "Company") because it "covers everything".
  • Adding unrelated categories to show up in more searches. It dilutes relevance and can look spammy.
  • Changing the primary category often. Each change can trigger re-review and ranking swings. Decide carefully, then leave it.
  • Copying a competitor's category that does not fit you.

Category names vary slightly by language and region; always pick from the list Google shows you.

How to change your category

  1. Open your profile on Google Search or Maps while signed in, or go to business.google.com.
  2. Edit profile → Business information → Business category.
  3. Set the primary category, add secondary ones, save.
  4. Changes may take a few days and can trigger a review. Avoid other big edits at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

How many categories should I add?

One primary and usually 3–5 secondary categories that genuinely match what you sell. More is not better if they are not accurate.

Will changing my primary category increase my ranking?

If your current category is wrong or too broad, choosing the correct specific one often helps significantly. If it is already right, changing it can hurt.

My exact business type is not in the list. What do I do?

Pick the closest, most specific available category for your main service, then describe the details in your description, services and posts.

Do categories affect AI search answers?

Yes. AI features such as Ask Maps use your categories along with attributes, reviews and your website to decide which businesses fit a question.
