UTM Tracking for Google Business Profile — Measure Exactly How Many Website Visits and Leads Come From Google Maps
How to add UTM parameters to your Google Business Profile website, appointment and menu links so Google Analytics shows Maps traffic separately, recommended UTM values, tagging posts and products, reading the reports in GA4, and common mistakes that break tracking.

Quick answer
Add UTM tags to the website link on your Google Business Profile — for example `https://yourbusiness.in/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp-listing` — so Google Analytics can separate visits from your profile from normal Google Search visits. Use different `utm_campaign` (or `utm_content`) values for the website button, appointment link, menu link and each post's button. Check results in GA4 under Traffic acquisition. Keep tags lowercase and consistent, and never tag links between pages on your own website.
Quick answer: Add UTM tags to the website link on your Google Business Profile — for example
https://yourbusiness.in/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp-listing— so Google Analytics can separate visits from your profile from normal Google Search visits. Use differentutm_campaign(orutm_content) values for the website button, appointment link, menu link and each post's button. Check results in GA4 under Traffic acquisition. Keep tags lowercase and consistent, and never tag links between pages on your own website.
Without UTM tags, visits from your Google profile usually show up mixed into "google / organic" in Analytics, so you can't tell whether people came from your Maps listing or a normal search result. UTM tags take two minutes to add and give you a clear answer.
What UTM parameters are
UTMs are labels added to the end of a URL. Analytics reads them and records where the visitor came from.
| Parameter | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Where the traffic comes from | |
| utm_medium | Type of traffic | organic |
| utm_campaign | Which link/campaign | gbp-listing |
| utm_content | Optional detail | website-button, post-diwali |
| utm_term | Optional keyword | (rarely used here) |

Recommended tags for each profile link
| Profile link | Suggested URL ending |
|---|---|
| Website button | ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp-listing |
| Appointment / booking link | ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp-booking |
| Menu link (restaurants) | ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp-menu |
| Post button (each post) | ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp-post&utm_content=diwali-offer |
| Product links | ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp-product&utm_content=product-name |
Why "organic"? Profile visits are unpaid, so keeping utm_medium=organic keeps them grouped sensibly with organic traffic in default channel reports. Some marketers use utm_medium=gbp or local — that's fine too if you stay consistent, but it may put the traffic in an "Unassigned" channel in GA4's default grouping.
How to add them
- Build the full tagged URL.
- Open your Business Profile → Edit profile → Contact → Website.
- Paste the tagged URL and save.
- Repeat for booking and menu links where your category supports them (booking links, menus).
- When creating posts with a button, paste the tagged URL in the button link (posts guide).
Test the URL in a browser first — your page should load normally with the tags.
Reading the results in GA4
- Open Google Analytics 4 → Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
- Change the primary dimension to Session source / medium and add Session campaign as a secondary dimension.
- Look for
google / organicwith campaigngbp-listing,gbp-postetc.
Combine with conversion events — calls, WhatsApp clicks, form submissions — to see leads, not just visits (track WhatsApp and call clicks, GA4 setup).
What UTMs can't measure
UTMs only track clicks to your website. Many profile actions happen without visiting your site:
- Calls from the Call button.
- Direction requests.
- WhatsApp or messaging (where available).
- Bookings through integrated partners.
Use Performance insights in your Business Profile for those (insights guide) and combine both views for a complete picture (track leads from GBP).
Will UTMs hurt SEO or ranking?
Google's own documentation and common practice show UTM-tagged profile links are widely used without ranking problems. To be safe:
- Make sure your page has a canonical tag pointing to the clean URL (most website builders do this automatically) so tagged versions aren't treated as separate pages.
- Don't use UTMs on internal links within your website — they overwrite the original source and break attribution.
Multi-location businesses
Add the location to utm_content or use location pages:
https://brand.in/locations/kothrud/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp-listing&utm_content=kothrud
Each outlet's profile should link to its own location page (multiple locations, franchise SEO).
Common mistakes
- Mixed case:
Googleandgoogleappear as different sources. Always lowercase. - Spaces: use hyphens, not spaces.
- Tagging internal links.
- Typos between profile links — keep a sheet of your standard tags.
- Forgetting to tag post buttons.
- Changing the website link frequently — each change may be reviewed (edits pending).
A simple monthly report
| Metric | This month | Last month |
|---|---|---|
| Profile website visits (GA4, gbp-listing) | ||
| Post clicks (gbp-post) | ||
| Leads from profile visitors (calls/WhatsApp/forms on site) | ||
| Calls from profile (Performance) | ||
| Direction requests (Performance) |
Five numbers are enough to see whether your profile work is paying off.
Example: a coaching institute in Kota
The institute's GA4 showed lots of "google / organic" traffic but no way to tell what came from Maps. After tagging the profile website link and every post button, it found that profile visitors were more likely to submit the demo-class form than visitors from regular search results. That justified posting weekly on Google and adding a "Book free demo" button to posts.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need UTMs if I have Performance insights?
Insights show clicks to your website, but UTMs show what those visitors did on your site — enquiries, bookings, pages viewed.
Can I track calls with UTMs?
No. Calls from the profile's Call button appear in Performance insights. Calls from your website can be tracked as events.
Will Google remove my UTM link?
Normally no. Make sure the link works and goes to your own site.
What if my website builder strips UTMs?
Test the tagged URL; if the tags disappear after redirects, fix the redirect or link directly to the final URL.
Should I tag my Instagram bio link too?
Yes, with utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social — it helps compare channels.
