Quick answer
In GA4, website visits are counted automatically, but local leads happen through clicks — on WhatsApp buttons (`wa.me` links), phone links (`tel:`) and Maps links. Turn on Enhanced measurement → Outbound clicks, create events or key events for clicks on `wa.me`, `tel:` and Maps URLs (via GA4's "Create event" or Google Tag Manager), and tag your Business Profile website link with UTM parameters so you can see which leads came from Google Maps.

Why this matters
A visitor who taps "Chat on WhatsApp" is far more valuable than one who reads a page and leaves. Without tracking, you can't tell which pages, posts or sources bring real enquiries.
Step 1: Tag your Business Profile link
Use a UTM link on your profile's website field so GA4 shows these visits separately (source = google, medium = organic, campaign = gbp_listing). Build it with our UTM link builder.
Step 2: Make your buttons trackable
- WhatsApp:
https://wa.me/91XXXXXXXXXX?text=...— WhatsApp link generator - Call:
tel:+91XXXXXXXXXX - Directions: a Google Maps link to your listing
Step 3: Create events in GA4
Option A — GA4 only (simplest):
- Admin → Data streams → your site → Enhanced measurement → make sure Outbound clicks is on.
- Admin → Events → Create event: name
whatsapp_click, conditionevent_name = clickandlink_url contains wa.me. - Repeat for
tel:(call_click) andmaps.google/google.com/maps(directions_click). - Mark them as Key events.
Note: phone links may need Google Tag Manager to capture reliably, because tel: clicks aren't always recorded as outbound clicks.
Option B — Google Tag Manager: create a Click trigger for "Click URL contains wa.me" and send a GA4 event. More flexible and reliable.
Step 4: Read the results
Reports → Engagement → Events → filter by your key events, then add Session source/medium to see how many came from google / organic with campaign gbp_listing.
What good looks like
Track monthly: visits from Google profile, WhatsApp clicks, call clicks, directions. If visits rise but clicks don't, improve the page: clearer prices, bigger buttons, trust signals.
Frequently asked questions
Does GA4 track phone calls?
It tracks taps on call links, not the call itself. Calls from your Business Profile appear in the profile's Performance tab.
Is GA4 free?
Yes.
Do I need a developer?
Option A can be done by anyone; GTM setups are easier with a developer's help.
