Quick answer
Create a GA4 property at analytics.google.com, add the Google tag to your website (most builders and WordPress plugins do this with your Measurement ID), keep Enhanced measurement on, and create events for phone clicks (`tel:` links), WhatsApp clicks (`wa.me` links), form submissions and directions clicks. Mark the important ones as key events, filter out your own visits, link Search Console and Google Ads, and add UTM tags to your Google Business Profile links. Then check six reports monthly: traffic acquisition, landing pages, key events by source, pages, devices and cities.

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) can look complicated, but a local business needs only a small part of it: where visitors come from, which pages they view, and how many call, chat or book. This guide covers exactly that.
Step 1: Create a GA4 property
- Go to analytics.google.com and sign in with your business Google account (business email).
- Admin → Create → Property. Enter business name, time zone (India) and currency (INR).
- Choose Web as the platform, enter your website URL and stream name.
- Copy your Measurement ID (looks like G-XXXXXXX).
Give a second owner (or your agency) access via Admin → Property access management — don't share passwords.
Step 2: Install the Google tag
- Website builders: paste the Measurement ID in the analytics or marketing integrations setting.
- WordPress: use Google's Site Kit plugin or a reputable analytics plugin (WordPress setup).
- Custom sites: add the gtag.js snippet to every page's
<head>, or use Google Tag Manager.
Check it works: Reports → Realtime, then open your website on your phone — you should see yourself.
Step 3: Keep Enhanced measurement on
In Admin → Data streams → Web → Enhanced measurement, GA4 automatically tracks page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video engagement and file downloads. Leave it on.
Step 4: Track the actions that matter
Local businesses care about contact, not just visits.
| Action | How to track |
|---|---|
| Phone clicks | Event when a tel: link is clicked |
| WhatsApp clicks | Event when a wa.me or api.whatsapp.com link is clicked |
| Form submissions | Thank-you page view or form submit event |
| Directions clicks | Click on Google Maps links |
| Bookings | Booking confirmation page or tool integration |
Methods:
- Google Tag Manager click triggers (most flexible).
- Create event in GA4 Admin based on existing events like
clickwith link URL containingtel:orwa.me(outbound click tracking may capture some). - Plugins that add click tracking automatically.
Detailed steps: track WhatsApp and call clicks.
Step 5: Mark key events
In Admin → Events (or Key events), mark phone_click, whatsapp_click, form_submit and booking as key events. These appear in reports and can be imported into Google Ads as conversions (Google Ads setup).
Step 6: Filter your own traffic
You and your staff visit the website often. In Admin → Data streams → Configure tag settings → Define internal traffic, add your shop's IP address, then activate the internal traffic filter. Your numbers become more accurate.
Step 7: Link other Google tools
- Search Console: see which Google searches bring visitors (Search Console guide).
- Google Ads: import key events as conversions and see ad performance.
- Google Business Profile: add UTM tags to profile links to separate Maps traffic (UTM tracking for GBP).
The 6 reports that matter
1. Traffic acquisition
Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition. Shows channels: Organic Search, Direct, Organic Social, Referral, Paid Search. Add Session source / medium and Session campaign to see your Google profile traffic.
2. Landing pages
Reports → Engagement → Landing page. Which pages people enter on. Your service pages should be here; if only the homepage appears, you may need better service pages (website for local SEO).
3. Key events by source
In Traffic acquisition, view Key events column. Which channels bring calls and chats, not just visits?
4. Pages and screens
Most-viewed pages — prices, gallery, contact. If many people view prices but few contact you, check your trust signals.
5. Devices
Tech → Overview. Usually mostly mobile — test your site on phones (speed guide).
6. Cities
User → Demographics → Cities (with enough data). Are visitors from your service area?
A monthly 15-minute review
| Question | Report |
|---|---|
| How many visitors? | Home / Traffic acquisition |
| Where from? | Traffic acquisition |
| How many calls/chats/forms? | Key events |
| Which pages bring leads? | Landing page + key events |
| Did Google profile traffic grow? | Session campaign gbp-* |
| Mobile experience OK? | Devices + engagement time |
Write the numbers in a sheet to see trends (digital marketing plan).
Privacy and consent
- Mention analytics and cookies in your privacy policy (privacy and DPDP).
- Don't send personal data (names, phone numbers) into GA4 event parameters.
- Consider consent banners, especially if you target visitors from regions with strict consent laws.
Common mistakes
- Installing the tag twice (inflated numbers).
- Not tracking calls and WhatsApp — the main local conversions.
- Ignoring internal traffic.
- Looking at sessions only, not key events.
- Losing access when an agency leaves — keep ownership in your account.
Example: a dental clinic in Vadodara
The clinic's website got about 2,000 visits a month, but the owner had no idea what worked. After installing GA4 with call and WhatsApp click tracking and UTM-tagging the Google profile link, the clinic saw that most WhatsApp clicks came from its Google profile and its "braces cost" page. It added more cost-explainer pages and made the WhatsApp button larger on those pages.
