Your Home Is Showing as a Business on Google Maps? How to Remove or Fix a Wrong Listing at Your Address

Google Maps shows a shop, clinic, tuition class or office at your house — maybe a previous owner's business, a tenant's business, your own home-based business with the address visible, or a listing someone added by mistake. Learn how to suggest an edit to remove it, mark it closed or moved, hide your address if it's your business, handle strangers arriving at your door, and protect your privacy.

Quick answer

If the listing isn't yours, open it in Google Maps, tap Suggest an edit → Close or remove → Doesn't exist here / Moved / Permanently closed, and add a short note. If it was a previous owner's or tenant's business, choose "Moved" or "Permanently closed" if you know. If it's your own home-based business and you don't want visitors, sign in, set it as a service-area business and remove the address so it no longer appears publicly. For persistent problems or privacy concerns, contact Google Business Profile support with evidence.

People ringing your bell asking for a dentist or tuition class is annoying and can be a privacy risk. It's usually fixable.

Who created the listing?

If it's not your business

  1. Open Google Maps and tap the listing.
  2. Tap Suggest an edit.
  3. Choose Close or remove.
  4. Select Doesn't exist here, Moved elsewhere or Permanently closed, as appropriate.
  5. Add a note: "This is a private residence. No business operates here."
  6. Submit.

Google reviews suggestions; it may take days. You can also suggest a correct address if you know where the business moved (suggest an edit as a customer).

If the business moved

Choose "Moved elsewhere" and, if possible, select the new location. This helps customers find the real business and keeps them away from your door.

If it's your own home-based business

You can keep the listing but hide the address:

  1. Sign in with the owner account.
  2. Edit profile → Location/Address.
  3. Remove the address (clear it) and add service areas instead.
  4. Save.

Your business still appears for searches in those areas, but customers won't see your house on the map (hide home address, service-area guide).

Tutors, home bakers and freelancers often prefer this (home tutors, freelancers).

If you stopped running the business

Mark it permanently closed from your owner account, or delete it if you'll never reopen (delete or close a profile).

If the listing keeps coming back

  • Make sure the old owner's profile is marked closed, not just edited.
  • Ask neighbours not to suggest it again.
  • Contact Google Business Profile support with evidence, such as your property documents (with sensitive details hidden) or a photo showing a residence with no signage.

Privacy and safety

If strangers are arriving because of a fake listing, or the listing contains your personal phone number, report it and ask support to remove it (remove personal phone number). For harassment, keep records and contact local police. You can also request blurring of your house on Street View (blur house on Street View).

Apartment buildings

In apartment complexes, businesses sometimes list the building address without a flat number, so visitors wander the building. If a business is listed at your flat, use the same suggest-an-edit steps. Societies can ask Google to correct listings that claim the society gate (residential societies).

Reviews at your address

If a removed listing had reviews, they disappear with it. If reviews about the old business appear on another listing at your address, see review meant for another business.

Example: an old tuition class

A family moved into a house where a tuition class had operated. Parents kept knocking. The family suggested an edit marking it "Moved elsewhere" and contacted the teacher, who updated her profile with the new address. Visits stopped within two weeks.

Example: a home baker

A home baker's address showed on Maps, and strangers came at odd hours. She converted her profile to a service-area business without an address, keeping her reviews. Orders continued through WhatsApp, and unexpected visits stopped.

Checklist

  • Identify who created the listing
  • Suggest "Doesn't exist here" or "Moved" if not yours
  • Hide your address if it's your home business
  • Mark closed if you stopped the business
  • Remove personal phone numbers
  • Contact support for persistent or privacy issues

Key takeaways

  • Wrong listings at homes are usually old or mistaken businesses.
  • Suggest an edit to remove or mark them closed or moved.
  • Home-based businesses can hide the address and use service areas.

Tell visitors politely in the meantime

Until the listing is fixed, a small note at your gate helps: "This is a private house. The clinic has moved to [new place]." Some families keep the new address of the old business handy to redirect people. It's courteous and reduces repeated knocks.

If a tenant runs a business from your property

Landlords sometimes find a tenant's business listed at their property. That's allowed while the tenant operates there. When the tenant leaves, ask them to update their listing to the new address or mark it closed. If they don't, suggest an edit yourself. Including this in your rental agreement saves trouble later.
