Google Business Profile for Service-Area Businesses (Plumbers, Electricians, Tutors)
How businesses that visit customers — plumbers, electricians, pest control, tutors, caterers — should set up a Google Business Profile, hide their address, choose service areas and still rank.

Quick answer
If customers don't visit your premises, hide your address and add service areas (cities or localities you actually serve). You'll still mostly rank near your verified base location, so win with reviews, photos of real jobs, accurate hours, a fast-answered phone and listings on Urban Company, Justdial and Sulekha. Never use a fake address or virtual office to appear in other areas.

Who is a service-area business (SAB)?
Businesses that go to the customer: plumbers, electricians, AC technicians, pest control, cleaners, carpenters, painters, home tutors, caterers, mobile mechanics. If you have a shop customers visit and you visit customers, you can show your address and also add service areas.
Setting it up correctly
- During setup, answer No to "Do you want to add a location customers can visit?" — or in Edit profile → Location, clear the business address.
- Add service areas: the cities, localities or pin-code areas you really serve (up to 20).
- Keep the area reasonable — typically within about two hours' drive of your base.
- Verify the business (video verification often shows your vehicle, tools and business documents).
How ranking works for SABs
Google still uses your verified location as the anchor for distance. Adding 20 service areas does not make you rank everywhere. You expand your reach by being more relevant and prominent:
| Lever | What to do |
|---|---|
| Reviews | Ask after every job; reply to all |
| Photos | Before/after of real jobs, team in uniform, branded vehicle |
| Posts | Seasonal services (AC service before summer, waterproofing before monsoon) |
| Hours | Show real hours; mention emergency availability only if true |
| Phone | Answer quickly — missed calls cost reviews |
| Citations | Urban Company, Justdial, Sulekha with identical details |
Mistakes that cause suspensions
- Showing a home address publicly when customers don't visit.
- Using virtual offices or co-working addresses to appear in other cities.
- Multiple listings for the same business in different areas.
- Keywords and city names in the business name.
Example: an electrician in Ahmedabad
An electrician working from home set up a service-area profile: address hidden, service areas listed as the 12 localities he actually covers (Satellite, Bodakdev, Vastrapur, Prahladnagar and others), primary category "Electrician", services with short descriptions (wiring, MCB and DB repair, fan and light installation, inverter installation).
He asked every customer for a review through a WhatsApp link after the job and added photos of real work — neat wiring, installed panels, his branded van. Over three months he began appearing in the top 3 for "electrician near me" across several of his service localities, especially those closest to his base.
Write a strong SAB description
Mention what you do, the areas you cover, response time and what makes you reliable — in natural sentences. Example: "Licensed electrician serving Satellite, Bodakdev and nearby areas of Ahmedabad. Same-day visits for wiring faults, MCB tripping, fan and light installation and inverter setup. Clear prices before work starts."
Proof photos SABs should upload
- You or your team at work (with permission from the customer).
- Before/after photos of jobs.
- Your vehicle with branding.
- Tools and equipment.
- Certificates or licences, if relevant.
Frequently asked questions
Can I show my address if I work from home?
Only if customers actually visit you there during business hours; otherwise hide it.
How many service areas should I add?
Only areas you genuinely serve. More areas don't increase ranking reach on their own.
Can I rank in a city 50 km away?
Rarely. Proximity to your verified base matters. A genuine branch with staff is the only reliable way.
