Quick answer
An unverified listing can still appear on Google Maps — often created automatically or by a customer — but it shows a "Claim this business" or "Own this business?" link, you can't reply to reviews, post updates or fully control details, and anyone can suggest edits that change it. Unverified or pending profiles usually rank weaker and are easier for others to misuse. To fix it, claim the listing with your Google account and complete verification — usually by video in India, sometimes by phone, SMS or email — then complete your profile.

Many business owners discover their shop already exists on Google Maps, with their name, maybe a wrong phone number and a few customer reviews. That listing is unverified until the owner claims it.
How unverified listings appear
- Created by Google from public data
- Added by customers or Local Guides (suggest an edit)
- Created by you but not yet verified
What customers see
- Your name, address and possibly phone and hours
- Reviews and photos from customers
- "Claim this business" or "Own this business?" link
What you can't do without verification
- Reply to reviews
- Post updates and offers
- Add products, services or menus
- See performance insights
- Prevent unwanted edits reliably
Why it ranks poorly
Unverified listings typically have incomplete information, fewer photos and no owner activity. Google also limits some features until verification. Verified, complete, active profiles generally perform better (new profile not ranking).
Risks
- Wrong information: customers or competitors may change hours or mark you closed (permanently closed fix).
- Someone else claims it: a former employee or agency could verify it (request ownership).
- Spam edits: fake phone numbers diverting calls.
How to verify
- Search your business on Google Maps.
- Tap Claim this business or Own this business? (claim this business).
- Sign in with your business Google account.
- Choose a verification method — usually video, sometimes phone, SMS or email (verification guide).
- Complete the steps.
Video verification tips: show your street, signboard, interior, products or equipment and proof like registration documents (video checklist).
If verification is pending
Google reviews video submissions; it can take a few days. Don't create a duplicate profile. If rejected, read the reason and try again with better evidence (verification failed).
If someone else already verified it
Request ownership through the claim flow. The current owner gets a notification; if they don't respond, Google may let you verify (request ownership).
After verification
- Complete every section
- Upload 10–20 real photos
- Reply to existing reviews
- Add services and products
- Post weekly (weekly routine)
Example: a hardware shop
A hardware shop owner found his shop on Maps with a wrong phone number. He claimed and verified it by video, corrected the number and replied to reviews. Calls from Google increased within weeks (hardware ranking).
Example: a clinic with pending verification
A clinic's verification was pending for a week. The doctor didn't create a new profile; instead, she waited and re-submitted a clearer video when asked. It was verified, and the profile started ranking.
Checklist
- Search your business
- Claim the listing
- Verify with clear proof
- Complete profile
- Reply to reviews
- Post regularly
Key takeaways
- Unverified listings show up but you can't manage them.
- Verification unlocks control, features and better ranking.
- Claim existing listings instead of creating duplicates.

Which verification method you'll get
Google chooses the methods offered based on your business type, location, history and other signals; you can't always pick. In India, video verification has become the most common for new profiles, while some businesses see phone call, SMS or email options, and a few established profiles are verified instantly when they're linked to a verified website in Google Search Console. Postcard verification, once common, is now rare. If you see only video, prepare carefully rather than waiting for a different option (verification by phone, video checklist).
Preparing for video verification
A good verification video is continuous, shot on a phone in good light and shows three things in order: where you are (the street, nearby shops or landmarks and the building), that the business exists (your signboard, shop front and interior with products, equipment or workspace) and that you manage it (opening the shop, using the billing system, showing registration certificates, a UPI QR in the business name or keys to the premises). Keep the video under a couple of minutes, don't cut or edit it, and avoid showing only close-ups that could be anywhere. Many rejections happen because videos show only the inside of a room with no identifying signboard or street view (verification failed).
Home and service-area businesses
If you work from home or visit customers, Google still needs to verify your base location. Show your street and building, your equipment, vehicle with branding if any, and proof of business. After verification you can hide your address (hide home address).
Avoid scams
Some callers claim they're from Google and demand money to verify or "protect" your listing. Google doesn't charge for verification and doesn't make unsolicited calls asking for payment (free or paid scams).
