Quick answer

On your own profile, go to Edit profile → Contact → Phone and replace your personal number with a business number (a dedicated SIM, landline or virtual number), and remove it from "additional phones". Update the same number on your website, WhatsApp Business and directories. If your number appears on a listing you don't own, open the listing in Maps, tap Suggest an edit → Change name or other details, and remove or correct the phone, adding a note that it's your private number. For persistent cases, contact Google Business Profile support.

Quick answer: On your own profile, go to Edit profile → Contact → Phone and replace your personal number with a business number (a dedicated SIM, landline or virtual number), and remove it from "additional phones". Many small owners used their personal mobile when creating a profile. As the business grows, so do calls at midnight, spam and sales pitches (stop spam calls).

Change the number on your own profile

  1. Sign in with the owner or manager account.
  2. Open your profile management panel → Edit profile.
  3. Go to Contact → Phone number.
  4. Replace the primary number, and check additional phone numbers.
  5. Save. The change may be reviewed.

Changing the phone can occasionally trigger a verification check, so avoid changing name, address and phone at the same time (re-verification, change name, address or phone).

Choose a business number

  • Second SIM in a dual-SIM phone, used only for the business.
  • Landline at the shop.
  • Virtual business number that forwards to staff phones (virtual business numbers).
  • Multiple numbers for departments or branches (multiple phone numbers).

Pick a number you'll keep for years. Changing numbers often confuses customers and directories.

Keep WhatsApp working

If customers contact you on WhatsApp, set up WhatsApp Business on the new business number and update the WhatsApp link on your profile (add WhatsApp, WhatsApp for local business). Keep the old number active for a few months with an auto-reply pointing to the new one.

Update the number everywhere

Google cross-checks other sources. Update your:

  • Website header, footer and contact page (contact page).
  • Justdial, IndiaMART and other directories (NAP citations).
  • Facebook, Instagram and Truecaller business profiles (Truecaller).
  • Visiting cards, bills, signboard and packaging.

Otherwise Google may change your profile back to the old number (Google updated my business info).

Your number on someone else's listing

Sometimes a personal number appears on another business's listing: a typo by the owner, an old number you inherited, or a fake listing.

  1. Open the listing in Google Maps.
  2. Tap Suggest an edit → Change name or other details.
  3. Remove or correct the phone number.
  4. Add a note: "This is my personal number; I'm not connected to this business."
  5. Submit.

If it's a fake listing, report it (report fake listings). If the number keeps coming back, contact Google Business Profile support with evidence that the number is yours.

Inherited numbers

If you got a recycled SIM that belonged to a business, you may receive calls meant for it. Suggest edits on any listing showing the number, and politely tell callers it's a new number.

Home-based businesses

If you work from home, also hide your address and use service areas, so neither your number nor your house is exposed unnecessarily (hide home address, my home showing as a business).

Does changing the number affect ranking?

A phone change itself doesn't usually hurt ranking if everything else stays consistent. Mismatched numbers across the web can create confusion, so update everywhere promptly (ranking dropped after editing).

Spam calls after listing

Business numbers attract sales calls. Use your phone's spam filters, block repeat callers, register with the national "Do Not Disturb" preference where it applies, and never share OTPs with callers claiming to be from Google (free or paid scams).

Example: a tutor's personal mobile

A home tutor's personal number was on her profile, and parents called late at night. She moved to a second SIM for tutoring, set WhatsApp Business on it with an away message, and hid her home address. Calls became manageable and her personal number stayed private.

Example: a number on a stranger's listing

A man received calls for a hardware shop he'd never heard of; the shop owner had mistyped his number. He suggested an edit with a note, and the correct number appeared within a few days.

Checklist

  • Replace personal number with a business number
  • Check additional phone numbers
  • Move WhatsApp Business to the new number
  • Update website, directories and cards
  • Suggest edits on listings using your number
  • Hide home address if home-based

Key takeaways

  • Use a dedicated business number on Google.
  • Update the number everywhere to stop Google reverting it.
  • Suggest edits or contact support to remove your number from others' listings.

Set calling hours

Even with a business number, decide when calls are answered. Set accurate hours on Google, an away message on WhatsApp Business, and voicemail or call forwarding for after-hours (after-hours enquiries). Customers respect clear boundaries when they know when you'll respond.

Answer business calls professionally

A dedicated number lets staff answer with a greeting such as "Namaste, Sharma Electricals, how can I help?" That sounds more trustworthy than a personal "Hello?" and helps callers know they've reached the right place (phone scripts).
