Claim This Business Option Not Showing on Google Maps? 8 Reasons and What to Do

Quick answer
The "Claim this business" (or "Own this business?") option usually disappears because the listing is already managed by someone — a previous owner, employee, agency or even a customer who claimed it — or because you're signed in to an account that already manages it. Search the listing while signed in to the right Gmail, then use Request access if someone else owns it. If the listing is a duplicate, closed or in a restricted category, fix that first.

Where the option normally appears
On Google Maps or Search, open your business listing. Unclaimed listings show Claim this business or Own this business? below the details. Tapping it starts verification.
8 reasons it's missing
- Someone already manages it. You'll see Request access or a message that another account manages it.
- You're signed in to the managing account. Open business.google.com — it may already be in your list.
- You're on the wrong Google account. Switch accounts in the top-right.
- The listing is marked permanently closed. Suggest an edit to reopen, or claim after it's reopened.
- It's a duplicate of another listing — claim the main one.
- It's part of a chain managed centrally (franchise, bank, fuel station).
- Restricted categories (some government, ATM, transit) can't be claimed normally.
- App glitch. Try a computer browser at business.google.com → Add business and search your name.
If someone else owns it
- Tap Request access and fill in your details and the access level you need.
- The current owner has a limited time to respond.
- If they don't respond, Google may let you verify and claim it yourself.
Full process: getting back ownership.
If you can't find your business at all
Then it isn't listed yet — add it fresh.
Avoid these mistakes
- Creating a new listing because the claim button is missing — creates a duplicate.
- Paying anyone who says they can "unlock" the claim button.
- Sharing your Gmail password with someone who "will claim it for you".
