Quick answer
In the Google Maps app, open the menu or the Contribute tab and choose Add or fix a road / Add a missing road to draw a road or lane, or Add a missing place for landmarks like a new society, temple or school. To correct the route to your shop, use Suggest an edit or Send feedback on the wrong road (closed, one-way, private, wrong name). Approvals can take days to weeks. Meanwhile, set your business pin at the exact entrance, add a landmark-based address and a Plus Code, and share a directions link.

"Google Maps took me through a field" or "it said turn left, but there's a wall" — these complaints hurt local businesses, especially in fast-growing Indian suburbs, new layouts and villages. You can fix many of them yourself.
Common map problems for Indian businesses
| Problem | Effect on your business |
|---|---|
| New road/lane not on map | Navigation takes a long detour |
| Society or colony not named | Customers can't confirm they're close |
| Road shown open but closed (gate, construction) | Customers stuck at a barricade |
| One-way not marked | Wrong-way routing |
| Pin on wrong side of divided road | Long U-turns |
| Old landmark name | Confusing directions |
Add a missing road
Google Maps app (Android/iPhone):
- Open Contribute (bottom bar) or the menu → Edit map.
- Choose Add or fix a road (labels vary by version).
- Draw the missing road by tapping points along it.
- Add the road name if known, and save.
On desktop, use Send feedback → Add a missing road where available, or Edit the map options in the menu.
Tips:
- Draw accurately along satellite imagery.
- Connect the new road to existing roads at real junctions.
- Add the official name if one exists (from a municipal board or society gate); otherwise leave it unnamed rather than inventing one.
Fix a wrong road
Tap the road on the map → Suggest an edit / Report a problem (wording varies), then choose:
- Road closed (permanently or temporarily, with dates if known).
- Wrong name.
- One-way / direction issues.
- Private road or not drivable.
- Road doesn't exist.
Add a short note: "Gate locked after 8 PM", "Road converted to footpath".
Add a missing place (landmark)
Landmarks help customers navigate in India more than street names. Add:
- New residential societies, apartment complexes.
- Temples, mosques, churches, gurudwaras.
- Schools, parks, community halls.
- Bus stops and metro exits.
In Maps → Contribute → Add place, enter name, category, and location. Only add real, permanent places — don't add fake landmarks or ad-style names.
To add your own business, use the Business Profile process instead, so you can manage it (add your business to Maps).
Fix routing to your business specifically
- Pin at the entrance: if your shop is on a service road or in a lane, place the pin exactly at the door, not on the main highway (fix wrong pin).
- Entrance side: for divided highways and large complexes, the pin side determines routing.
- Address line with landmark: "Service lane behind Big Bazaar, enter from Gate 2".
- Plus Code: precise sharing (Plus Codes and DIGIPIN).
- Photos of the approach: upload a photo of the lane entrance and signboard so customers recognise it (signboard tips).
- Directions link in WhatsApp and website (directions link generator).
How long do map edits take?
- Some edits apply quickly; others are reviewed by Google and may take days to a few weeks.
- Edits with clear satellite evidence and consistent reports from multiple users tend to be accepted faster.
- You can track your contributions in the Contribute tab (or "Your contributions").
If an important correction isn't accepted, ask a few regular customers or neighbours who use the road to report the same issue honestly — multiple genuine reports carry weight. Don't create fake accounts to vote.
Street View and imagery
If imagery is outdated (your building is new), Street View may not show your shop for some time. You can publish your own 360° photos or Street View content where available (Street View and 360 photos).
New colonies and layouts: a checklist
- Main approach roads drawn.
- Society/colony added as a place with correct name.
- Your business pin at the entrance.
- Address includes colony, nearest main road and landmark.
- Plus Code shared on WhatsApp and visiting cards.
- Builder/RWA informed to add their own listings (real estate projects).
Rural and highway businesses
- Add village names and approach roads missing on the map.
- Mark seasonal roads (flooded in monsoon) via notes if relevant.
- Add your distance from known landmarks in posts and descriptions ("2 km after Bagru toll plaza") (small towns SEO).
Example: a pre-school in a new Hyderabad layout
Parents kept getting routed through an unfinished road blocked by construction. The school drew the actual approach road from the main avenue, marked the unfinished stretch as closed, added the gated community as a place, and moved its pin to the school gate. After the edits were accepted about two weeks later, navigation complaints in reviews disappeared.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a Local Guide to edit the map?
No. Anyone with a Google account can suggest edits. Local Guides contributions may be trusted more over time (Local Guides).
Why was my road edit rejected?
It may not match imagery, conflict with other data, or seem unverifiable. Try again with precise drawing and notes.
Can I rename a road?
You can suggest the official name. Don't invent names or add business names to roads.
Can I stop Google routing customers through a private lane?
Mark it as private or not suitable via a road edit, and set your pin and address to the public entrance.
Will fixing roads improve my ranking?
Not directly, but customers reaching you easily means fewer bad reviews and more completed visits.
