Getting your business onto Google Maps is the single most valuable free marketing step for a local business in India. When people search "medical store near me" or "best tailor in Rajkot", Google shows a map with a few businesses — and you want to be one of them. Here is the exact process, with the mistakes that most often delay or block a listing.

Before you start: what you need

  • A Google account (Gmail) that you own. Don't use an employee's or agency's account — you may lose access later.
  • Your exact business name as on your signboard.
  • Your full address with pincode, or the list of areas you serve if customers don't come to you.
  • A phone number answered during business hours.
  • Your opening hours.
  • A few real photos of the shop front, interior and products.

Total time: 10–15 minutes to create, plus a few minutes for verification.

Step 1: Check if your business already exists

Search your business name on Google Maps. A customer or an old data source may already have created a listing. If you find it:

  • Tap it → Claim this business or Own this business? and follow the steps.
  • If someone else already manages it, request access — see our guide on getting back ownership.

Creating a second listing when one exists makes a duplicate, which splits your reviews and can cause problems.

Step 2: Start the profile

On a phone: open the Google Maps app → tap your profile photo (top right) → Add your business → Create Business Profile.

On a computer: go to business.google.com → Manage now / Add business.

Enter your business name exactly as customers see it. Do not add city names, offers or keywords — that breaks Google's name rules.

Step 3: Choose your category carefully

Start typing what you do and pick the most specific option: "Sweet shop" rather than "Shop", "Dentist" rather than "Doctor", "Mobile phone repair shop" rather than "Electronics store". The primary category is widely considered the single strongest ranking factor for local search. You can add more categories later.

Step 4: Address or service area

  • Customers visit you (shop, clinic, restaurant): add your address and place the pin exactly on your entrance.
  • You visit customers (plumber, electrician, tutor at home, pest control): choose that you don't serve customers at your address, hide it, and add the areas you serve.
  • Both (a salon that also does home visits): add your address and service areas.

Step 5: Contact details

Add your phone number and website (if you have one). No website? You can leave it blank for now — a complete profile can still rank.

Step 6: Verify your business

Google needs to confirm you're real. Options shown depend on your business and category:

  • Video recording (common in India): a short continuous video showing your signboard and street, the inside of your business, and proof you manage it (e.g., unlocking the shop, a business document, tools of your trade).
  • Phone call or SMS code.
  • Email code.
  • Postcard to your address (less common now).

Tips for video verification: shoot in daylight, start outside showing the street and a nearby landmark, walk in without cutting the video, show the signboard clearly, and show something only the owner can access. Our verification guide covers rejections in detail.

Verification review can take from a few minutes to several days.

Step 7: Complete your profile (the step most people skip)

A verified-but-empty profile rarely ranks. Within the first week:

  1. Hours — regular hours plus special hours for holidays.
  2. Photos — 10+ real photos: shop front from the road, signboard, interior, products, team.
  3. Description — 600–750 characters on what you do, who you serve and where (examples).
  4. Services / products — every main service with a one-line description.
  5. Attributes — UPI, wheelchair access, parking, women-led and more.
  6. Review link — copy it and start asking customers for reviews.

Step 8: Your first 30 days

  • Ask every happy customer for a review — a QR poster at the counter makes it easy.
  • Reply to every review.
  • Publish a post each week.
  • Add the same name, address and phone on Justdial, Bing Places, Facebook and your website.

Common mistakes that block or delay a listing

  • Keywords or phone numbers in the business name.
  • A pin in the middle of the road or on the wrong building.
  • Using a virtual office or someone else's address.
  • Creating a new listing instead of claiming an existing one.
  • Verification video that cuts between clips or doesn't show the signboard.
  • Editing name, address and category repeatedly right after verification.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free to add my business to Google Maps?

Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile is free. Be careful of callers asking for "verification fees" — read our guide on Google listing scams.

How long until my business shows on Google Maps?

Usually within a few days of successful verification, though full visibility for category searches builds over weeks as you add photos, reviews and posts.

Can I add my home-based business?

Yes. If customers don't visit your home, set it up as a service-area business and hide your address.

Can I add a business without a shop or signboard?

Google expects a real business that meets customers in person, at your location or theirs. Online-only businesses are generally not eligible — see who qualifies.

Can I manage the listing from my phone only?

Yes. Everything — editing, photos, posts and replying to reviews — works from the Google Maps app and Google Search on your phone.
