Can an Online-Only Business Get a Google Business Profile? Eligibility Rules Explained for India
Who is eligible for a Google Business Profile — shops, service-area businesses, home businesses, online sellers, freelancers, virtual offices — and what online-only businesses should do instead.

Quick answer
Google Business Profiles are for businesses that make in-person contact with customers during stated hours — either at a physical location customers visit (shop, clinic, office) or by travelling to customers (plumber, tutor, caterer). Purely online businesses (e-commerce stores, online courses, digital-only services) generally aren't eligible unless they have a staffed location customers can visit, such as a showroom or pickup counter. Virtual offices, co-working "addresses" without staff, and P.O. boxes are not allowed.

Many Indian entrepreneurs run businesses from home, sell on Instagram, or operate purely online. Understanding the eligibility rules saves you from a suspended profile later.
Who is eligible
1. Storefront businesses — customers visit during business hours: shops, restaurants, clinics, salons, offices, schools, showrooms.
2. Service-area businesses — you travel to customers: electricians, plumbers, AC repair, pest control, home tutors, caterers, photographers, movers. Hide your address and list service areas. See our service-area guide.
3. Hybrid businesses — both: a bakery that also delivers, a salon that also offers home visits.
4. Home businesses that meet customers — a home tuition centre, a home-based tailor, a beautician working from home. If customers come to your home, you can show the address; if you go to them, hide it.
Who is usually not eligible
- Online-only stores with no location customers can visit.
- Businesses under construction or not yet open (you can create a profile shortly before opening with an opening date).
- Virtual offices or mailbox/address services without staff present.
- Rental or for-sale property listings (individual flats, plots).
- Lead generation "businesses" set up only to capture calls for others.
- Ongoing services or classes held at someone else's location (e.g., a weekly yoga class in a community hall) — usually not eligible as a separate business.
Special cases
- Freelancers and consultants (CA, lawyer, designer): eligible if you meet clients in person at an office or at their location during set hours.
- Doctors in multi-doctor clinics: individual practitioners can have their own profiles in many cases, alongside the clinic's profile, following Google's practitioner rules.
- Departments within a business (e.g., hospital emergency, pharmacy) may qualify for separate profiles if they have distinct functions and hours.
- Co-working spaces: a business with real staff present at a dedicated desk during hours, with signage, has a better case than a "virtual office" address — but be careful; virtual offices are a common cause of suspension.
Online business? Here's what to do instead
- Open a pickup point or showroom if it fits your model — then you're eligible for that location.
- Grow on search with a website: product pages, blog content and Google Merchant Center listings for products.
- Marketplaces and social: Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, Instagram shops.
- Brand presence on Google: a strong website, consistent social profiles, and listings on review sites can still build a brand panel over time.
Signs your profile may be at risk
- Your address is a co-working "virtual" address with no staff.
- You list hours but nobody is available at the location.
- You have multiple profiles for the same business at different "addresses".
- You've added keywords to your business name.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run a Google Business Profile from my home address?
Yes, if customers visit you there or you travel to them. If they don't visit, hide the address and set service areas.
I sell on Instagram and deliver locally. Am I eligible?
If you deliver in person to customers in a defined area during set hours, you may qualify as a service-area business. Pure shipping via couriers does not count as in-person contact.
Can I use my CA's office address?
No. The address must be where your business actually operates and is staffed.
