Quick answer

Google allows a Business Profile at an address where your business has a real, permanent presence with staff during stated hours and serves customers in person (or you're a service-area business). A virtual office or mail-drop address you don't actually work from is generally not eligible. A co-working space can be eligible if you have a dedicated, staffed presence there with signage and customers can meet you during your listed hours. Several genuine businesses can share one building — use accurate suite/floor details and distinct names, phones and categories. If you don't meet customers, list as a service-area business and hide your address.

Startups, consultants, CAs, agencies, recruiters and online businesses in India often work from co-working spaces or rent "virtual office" addresses for GST registration. Many then try to put that address on Google Maps — and get suspended. Here's how to stay within the rules.

Google's core eligibility idea

From Google's guidelines for representing your business:

  • The business must make in-person contact with customers during stated hours — at its location or by going to customers.
  • The location must be a real physical location; P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes aren't eligible.
  • Virtual offices are not eligible unless they're staffed during business hours.
  • Co-working spaces may be acceptable if your business has a real, staffed presence there.

Online-only businesses without customer contact are not eligible for a profile (online business eligibility).

Situation by situation

Situation Eligible? Notes
Virtual office (address for GST/mail only) Generally no Not staffed by you; high suspension risk
Co-working hot desk, no fixed seat, no signage Risky Hard to verify, customers can't reliably find you
Co-working dedicated cabin with your signage, staffed hours Often yes Make sure reception will direct customers to you
Business centre with your own staffed office Yes Use suite/office number
Home office where clients visit Yes Show address only if you welcome visitors
Home-based, you visit clients Yes, as service-area Hide address (service-area guide)
Doctor practising in multiple clinics Depends See practitioner listings
Shop-in-shop (counter inside another store) Sometimes Must be distinct, staffed, with its own signage

Why virtual offices get suspended

  • Google sees many businesses at the same address with no visible presence.
  • Verification (especially video verification) can't show your signage or workspace.
  • Competitors or users report "this business isn't here".
  • Profile edits or reviews flag inconsistencies.

The result is often a suspension that's hard to appeal, because the address genuinely doesn't qualify (suspension fix).

Making a co-working presence eligible

If you have a genuine presence:

  1. Dedicated space — a cabin or fixed desk area.
  2. Signage — your business name on the door, cabin or at reception (with space operator's permission).
  3. Staffed hours — someone from your business present during listed hours.
  4. Customer access — visitors can come in and meet you; reception knows your business.
  5. Address details — building, floor, cabin/office number exactly as mail is addressed.
  6. Distinct phone number — your own, not the co-working reception.
  7. Proof — agreement with the space, signage photos, utility/rent documents for verification.

For video verification, show the building entrance, signage, your workspace and evidence you manage the business (verification).

Shared buildings and shared addresses

Many Indian commercial complexes house dozens of businesses at one address. That's fine if each is genuine:

  • Use floor and shop/office numbers in the address line.
  • Each business needs its own name, phone, category and signage.
  • Pins should point to the correct building entrance.
  • Don't create separate profiles for departments or services of the same business (except where Google allows, like certain hospital departments — see hospital departments).

Practitioners sharing a clinic

Doctors, lawyers and consultants who share a practice may be able to have individual practitioner profiles plus a profile for the practice, under specific rules (practitioner listings).

If you don't qualify for a location listing

You still have good options:

GST address vs Google address

Your GST principal place of business can be a virtual office for tax purposes (subject to GST rules), but that doesn't make it eligible for Google Maps. Keep them separate in your mind: tax registration proves you exist as a business; Google eligibility depends on in-person customer contact at that location (GST registration).

Example: a digital agency in Bengaluru

An agency listed its virtual office in a business park and was suspended within weeks. It moved to a co-working space with a dedicated 4-seat cabin, put its logo on the cabin door with the operator's permission, staffed it 10 AM–7 PM, and created a new profile with the cabin number. Video verification showed the building, reception directory, cabin signage and team at work. The profile was approved — and clients now use it for directions to meetings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my CA's office address?

Only if your business actually operates there with staff during listed hours. Otherwise, no.

Can two of my businesses share one address?

Yes, if they're genuinely separate businesses with their own names, signage, phones and categories.

My co-working space has 200 companies listed. Is that a problem?

Not by itself, but each listing must be genuine. Strong signage and staffed presence matter for verification.

Can I list a virtual office and hide the address?

Hiding the address is for service-area businesses that visit customers. It doesn't make a virtual office eligible if you don't serve customers in person anywhere.

What if I move from co-working to my own office?

Update the address on the same profile rather than creating a new one (changing address).
