Quick answer
Track outcomes, not vanity metrics. Every month, record: (1) calls, (2) direction requests, (3) website clicks and (4) bookings/messages from your Google Business Profile; (5) total profile interactions and views; (6) top search keywords; (7) new reviews, (8) average rating and (9) review reply rate; (10) ranking coverage from a geogrid or point checks; (11) website leads (calls, WhatsApp, forms) from organic and Google profile traffic; and (12) new customers and revenue attributed to Google. Compare month-over-month and with the same month last year to account for seasonality.

"Is our local SEO working?" should never be answered with a feeling. A one-page monthly report with 12 numbers tells you — and your team or agency — exactly what's improving and what needs attention.

How to read each KPI
Calls, directions, website clicks (1–3)
These are your most important profile outcomes. Rising numbers mean more people are choosing you after seeing your profile. If views rise but actions don't, improve photos, reviews and description (get more calls).
Search keywords (6)
Look for:
- Growth in category searches ("dentist", "dentist near me") — discovery is improving.
- Growth in branded searches (your name) — awareness is improving (branding).
- New service keywords — add them to services, posts and website content (local keyword research).
Reviews and rating (7–9)
- Aim for a steady flow rather than spikes (review velocity).
- Watch rating trends after operational changes.
- Reply to 100% of reviews, ideally within 24–48 hours (reply guide).
Ranking coverage (10)
Track the same keywords and grid monthly. More top-3 points means a larger effective radius (proximity).
Website leads (11)
Use UTM tags on profile links to separate Google profile traffic (UTM tracking) and track call/WhatsApp clicks (click tracking).
Customers and revenue (12)
Ask every new customer "How did you find us?" and record it. Multiply by average bill or lifetime value to estimate revenue from local SEO (ROI calculator).
Vanity metrics to de-prioritise
- Total views without actions.
- Number of posts published (activity, not results).
- Social followers from outside your area.
- Single-point ranking checks from your own shop.
They're inputs or context, not outcomes.

Interpreting trends
| Pattern | Possible meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Views ↑, actions flat | Profile not convincing | Better photos, reviews, offers in posts |
| Branded searches ↑ | Offline/brand marketing working | Keep it up |
| Category searches ↓ | Ranking or seasonality | Check grid, competitors, season |
| Reviews flat | Asking stopped | Restart review system (getting reviews) |
| Calls ↓ suddenly | Wrong phone, edits, suspension | Check profile details (ranking dropped) |
Seasonality
Compare with the same month last year, not just last month. A sweet shop's November will always beat its July; a coaching centre peaks around admissions (festival marketing).
Multi-location reporting
Use the same template per location plus a summary. Rank locations by calls per 1,000 views and reviews per month to spot best practices (multiple locations).
Holding agencies accountable
Ask for these 12 numbers monthly, with raw screenshots or exports. Be wary of reports filled with impressions, "keyword rankings" from a single point and no lead data (choosing an agency).
Example: a physiotherapy clinic in Coimbatore
The clinic started a one-page report. In month one, views rose but calls didn't; the team added treatment photos and a stronger description. In month three, calls and directions rose, reviews averaged a steady handful a week, and "physiotherapist near me" top-3 grid points grew. The report made it easy to see which actions had worked.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I report?
Monthly for most businesses; weekly checks of reviews and calls are useful during campaigns.
Why do Performance numbers differ from my call logs?
Performance counts call button taps; not every tap becomes a completed call, and customers also call from other sources.
What's a good rating?
Above 4.3 is generally strong, but recent reviews and volume matter alongside the average.
Can I export Performance data?
Yes, you can view and download metrics in your profile; tools can also pull them via API (GBP APIs).
Which KPI matters most?
New customers from Google — everything else supports that.
