Quick answer

Google Pay offers merchant tools in India so shops can accept UPI payments with a business QR code, see transaction history, and in some cases run offers or access business features. Use a business (merchant) account, not your personal UPI, so customers see your shop name and you get clean records. Complete KYC with your PAN, bank account and business details, display the QR at the counter, verify each payment in the app or with a sound box, and never enter your UPI PIN to receive money. Payments complement — but don't replace — your Google Business Profile, which is what brings new customers.

Google Pay is one of the most widely used UPI apps in India. Many customers prefer paying through it — and many shopkeepers start by sharing their personal GPay number. Moving to proper merchant tools makes payments faster, more professional and easier to track.

Google Pay's business features, app names and onboarding process change over time. Check the official Google Pay for Business help pages for the latest information.

Personal UPI vs business account

Personal UPI Merchant/business account
Name shown to customers Your personal name Your shop name
Transaction records Mixed with personal Separate business history
Professional image Low High
Business features None QR standee, reports, possibly offers
Limits and compliance Personal limits; may be flagged for heavy business use Designed for business volume

If you receive many payments a day, a merchant account is the right choice.

Onboarding basics

Typical requirements include:

  • A smartphone with the business app or merchant option.
  • Mobile number linked to the bank account.
  • Business bank account (current account recommended) or eligible savings account.
  • PAN and identity details.
  • Business name, category and address.
  • Sometimes business proof — GST, Udyam or Shop Act certificate (GST, Udyam, Shop Act).

Use the same business name as on your signboard and Google Business Profile, so customers recognise you everywhere (business name rules).

Setting up your QR

  • Download or request your business QR code and print it on a standee.
  • Place it where customers pay, at eye level, protected from damage (QR placement and fraud tips).
  • Any UPI app can scan a UPI QR, so you don't need separate codes for each app.
  • Consider a sound box to hear payment confirmations.

Settlements and records

  • UPI payments typically arrive in your linked bank account quickly — check your provider's terms.
  • Use the app's transaction history and download statements for your accountant.
  • Record UPI as a payment mode in your billing software (billing guide).

Offers and customer engagement

Payment apps sometimes provide merchant-led offers, rewards or promotional tools. Use them carefully:

  • Keep offers simple and honest.
  • Don't link offers to reviews — never give rewards for Google reviews (review policy).
  • Track whether offers bring repeat customers, not just one-time bargain hunters.

Safety rules for every shop

  • You never need a PIN to receive money. Any request asking for your PIN to "receive" is a scam.
  • Verify payments in your app or sound box; don't trust screenshots.
  • Beware "wrong payment, please refund" messages — refund only after verifying the payment in your account, and only to the original sender.
  • Don't share OTPs or screen-share with "support agents".
  • Check your QR code daily for tampering.
  • Lock your phone and app with PIN/biometric.

Connect payments with your Google presence

Payments and your Google Business Profile are separate products, but together they shape the customer experience:

  • Show payment methods on your Business Profile where attributes are available (attributes).
  • Add "UPI accepted" in your posts and photos of your counter.
  • Ask for reviews at payment time — place a separate review QR next to the payment QR (review QR generator).
  • Keep your business name consistent so customers who search you on Google recognise the payee name.

Accepting payments remotely

For phone or WhatsApp orders:

  • Share your UPI ID or QR image.
  • Better: send a payment link with the exact amount from a payment gateway or app (online payments).
  • Confirm payment before dispatch.

Using payment data

  • Peak hours → staff planning and correct Google opening hours.
  • Daily/weekly totals → measure promotions and festivals.
  • Repeat customers → consider loyalty ideas (retention).

Example: a chai stall in Hyderabad

A busy chai stall used the owner's personal UPI for years, mixing family and business money. After setting up a merchant account with a printed standee showing the stall's name and a sound box, the owner could see daily totals, stopped arguing over "I already paid" claims and used statements to apply for a small business loan.
