Quick answer
Pick a short, easy-to-spell domain that matches your business name — ideally under 15 characters, no hyphens or numbers unless they're part of your brand. For a business serving Indian customers, a .in domain works well and often has better name availability; .com is great if it's free and reasonably priced. Buy it from a well-known registrar under your own account and email, turn on auto-renewal and domain lock, and keep the login safe — whoever controls the domain controls your website and email.
Quick answer: Pick a short, easy-to-spell domain that matches your business name — ideally under 15 characters, no hyphens or numbers unless they're part of your brand. Your domain is your permanent online address. It goes on your board, bills, visiting cards, Google Business Profile and email. Changing it later means reprinting everything and losing some search history — so it's worth 30 minutes of careful thought now.
What makes a good local business domain
- Short: sharmasweets.in beats sharmasweetsandnamkeenhousebhopal.com.
- Easy to say on the phone: if you have to spell it out twice, it's too hard.
- Matches your business name: customers search your name; the domain should feel the same.
- No hyphens or numbers unless part of your brand — "sharma-sweets-1" gets mistyped.
- Avoid confusing letters: double letters at word joins ("dentallab" vs "dental-lab") and words with many spellings.
- Memorable in your language: test with a few customers. Can they remember it after hearing it once?
.in, .co.in or .com?
| Extension | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| .in | Clearly Indian, good availability, trusted locally | Less familiar to some overseas visitors |
| .co.in | Indian, often available | Longer, people may forget the "co" |
| .com | Most familiar worldwide | Good names often taken or expensive |
| .shop, .store, .clinic etc. | Descriptive, available | Less familiar; some customers type .com by habit |
For Google, the extension doesn't decide your local ranking — your Business Profile, reviews, relevance and website content matter far more. Choose what your customers will remember.
Should you include your city or service?
- Brand only: "kavyasalon.in" — best if your name is distinctive.
- Brand + city: "kavyasalonpune.in" — useful when the brand name is common or taken.
- Service + city (exact-match): "bestsaloninpune.in" — avoid. It looks generic, is hard to trust and doesn't help much with Google.
If you plan to open branches in other cities, avoid locking the city into your domain. Use location pages on one site instead — see multiple locations.
Check before you buy
- Trademark: search the brand name online and on the trademark registry to avoid conflicts with an existing brand.
- Social handles: check if the same name is available on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
- Similar domains: if yourname.com is a competitor or an unrelated adult site, choose something else.
- History: a previously used domain might carry spam history. Check old versions on a web archive site.

Buying safely
- Choose a reputable registrar with clear pricing.
- Create the account in your own name and with your business email or main Gmail.
- Add correct contact details (WHOIS privacy is usually available).
- Pay for 2–3 years if you're sure — fewer renewal risks.
- Turn on auto-renewal and domain lock (transfer lock).
- Enable two-step verification on the registrar account.
The developer trap
Many small businesses let a web designer buy the domain. Years later, the designer disappears or demands money, and the business loses its website and email. If someone else registered your domain, ask them today to transfer it to your account — it's your business asset.
Renewal price surprises
Some registrars offer a cheap first year and a much higher renewal. Before buying, check the renewal price, not just the first-year price. Add the renewal date to your calendar even with auto-renewal on — expired cards cause many domain losses.
DNS basics in plain words
Your domain's DNS settings are a signboard telling the internet where things live:
- A / CNAME records: where your website is hosted.
- MX records: where your email goes — see business email setup.
- TXT records: verification codes for Google, email security (SPF, DKIM, DMARC).
You can host your website with one company, email with another, and keep the domain at a third. That's normal and flexible.
Connecting the domain to your online presence
- Add the website to your Google Business Profile website field.
- Verify it in Google Search Console (guide).
- Use it in your email address.
- Print it on boards, bills and visiting cards.
- Add it to social profiles.
Should you buy extra domains?
Buying common misspellings or the .com version and forwarding them to your main site can protect your brand. For most local businesses, one main domain plus the .com/.in pair is enough. Don't run duplicate sites on several domains — it confuses customers and search engines.
Examples
| Business | Good choice | Weak choice |
|---|---|---|
| Kavya Beauty Salon, Pune | kavyasalon.in | best-beauty-salon-pune-kavya.com |
| Dr. Mehta Dental Clinic | drmehtadental.in | mehta-dental-clinic-and-implant-centre.co.in |
| Annapurna Caterers | annapurnacaterers.com | annapurna123caterers.in |
Frequently asked questions
Does a .in domain rank better in India?
A country domain signals India, but local ranking depends far more on your Google profile, reviews and content.
How much does a domain cost?
.in and .com domains are generally affordable yearly; premium names cost more. Check renewal prices.
Can I change my domain later?
Yes, with proper 301 redirects from old to new pages, but you'll need to update every listing, print material and email address.
Do I need a website to buy a domain?
No. You can buy it now, set up email, and build the website later. Google's free Business Profile website was shut down — see what replaced it.
Is it safe to buy from a new registrar with a big discount?
Stick to well-known registrars with good support. Cheap offers aren't worth the risk of losing your domain.
