Why Did My Google Reviews Disappear? Causes, What You Can Recover and How to Prevent It
Google reviews missing or review count dropped? Learn why Google removes or hides reviews — spam filters, policy violations, profile changes, duplicates — what you can do about each, and how to collect reviews that stick.

Quick answer
Reviews usually disappear because Google's automated systems flagged them as possibly fake or policy-violating (for example, many reviews from the same Wi-Fi, from staff or family, posted in a sudden burst, or after an incentive), because the reviewer deleted them or their account, or because of profile issues like a merge, a move or a suspension. Genuine reviews removed by mistake can sometimes be appealed from your Business Profile's review management tools. The best prevention is a steady flow of genuine reviews from real customers, never incentives or "review stations".

Waking up to find your 4.8★ with 120 reviews has become 4.6★ with 97 is painful. The good news: it's rarely random. Understanding why Google removes reviews helps you recover what can be recovered and stop it from happening again.
The most common reasons reviews disappear
1. Automated spam filters
Google filters reviews it thinks may be fake. Patterns that raise flags include:
- Many reviews arriving in a short burst after a long silence.
- Reviews posted from the same location or network as your business (for example, customers using your shop Wi-Fi, or a tablet at the counter).
- Reviewers with brand-new accounts that review only your business.
- Many similar-sounding reviews.
Even genuine reviews can be caught. This is why we recommend asking customers to review later, from their own phone and own data connection.
2. Policy violations
Google's policies prohibit reviews that are incentivised (discounts, freebies, cashback), written by employees or family, posted by competitors, off-topic, or containing hate, harassment or personal information. When Google finds incentive or "review gating" programmes, it can remove large batches and may restrict the profile from receiving new reviews for a period, sometimes with a public warning.
3. The reviewer removed it
Customers can edit or delete their own reviews. If someone deletes their Google account, their reviews disappear too.
4. Profile changes
- Merged duplicates: reviews may move between listings or take time to show.
- Moved address or big category change: in rare cases Google may treat it as a different place.
- Suspension: reviews are hidden while a profile is suspended and normally return after reinstatement.
5. Temporary display glitches
Occasionally reviews stop displaying across Google for a short time and then return. If many businesses in your area report the same thing, wait a few days before acting.
What you can do right now
- Note the facts: take a screenshot of your current count and rating; write down roughly when it dropped and how many.
- Check for warnings in your Business Profile dashboard — a restriction or suspension message explains a lot.
- Check your own actions: did you recently run a "review and get 10% off" offer, ask staff to review, or set up a review tablet? Stop it immediately.
- Use the review management tools: Google provides a tool to check the status of reviews you reported and, in some cases, to appeal removed reviews. Appeal only genuine reviews from real customers.
- Contact support if you believe a large batch of genuine reviews was removed by mistake, with evidence that the reviewers were real customers (bills, bookings).
Can I get removed reviews back?
Sometimes. Genuine reviews removed by an automated filter can occasionally be restored after an appeal. Reviews removed for clear policy reasons (incentives, staff reviews) will not be restored. Either way, don't ask the same customers to post again immediately in a burst — that can trigger filters again.
How to collect reviews that stick
- Ask everyone, not just happy customers, the same way.
- No incentives of any kind — not even a free sweet.
- Let customers review from their own phone, later: give a card or QR, or send a WhatsApp link after the visit.
- Steady, not bursty: aim for a few reviews every week rather than 50 in a weekend.
- Never use staff, relatives or "review exchange" WhatsApp groups.
- Reply to every review — it shows real engagement.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my 5-star review from a real customer vanish?
Most likely an automated filter flagged it — common if it was posted at your premises on your Wi-Fi, or from a new account. You can try the appeal option in Google's review management tools.
My competitor's fake reviews are still there. Why were mine removed?
Filters aren't perfect. You can report clearly fake reviews on competitors' profiles, but focus most energy on building genuine reviews.
Does deleting and re-creating my profile restore reviews?
No — never do this. You lose all reviews and history.
Can Chamko protect my reviews?
Chamko only helps you request reviews in a policy-safe way — no incentives, no gating — through WhatsApp messages and QR posters that customers use on their own phones, and it replies to every review for you.
