When calls, website clicks, or directions requests decline, the total action count alone does not explain why. Different actions may move for different reasons, so diagnose each one separately.
First, define the change
Record the exact metric, location, period, and comparison period. Business Profile performance includes multiple action types, and only metrics applicable to a business may appear. Confirm that the same profile set and date filters are used in both periods.
Diagnostic sequence
1. Separate exposure from action
Review profile views and available search information alongside the specific action. If views and actions both fall, investigate visibility and business context. If views remain similar but one action falls, inspect the path associated with that action.
2. Break down the action
- Calls down: check phone number accuracy, opening hours, missed-call handling, and phone-log context.
- Website clicks down: test the website link, destination page, and any URL changes.
- Directions down: verify the map pin, address, entrance information, and access conditions.
- Bookings down: check whether the booking flow or provider is available and whether the report's metric definition is unchanged.
These are investigation paths, not confirmed explanations.
3. Check operational context
Look for holidays, temporary closures, reduced hours, service changes, seasonal demand, local disruptions, and promotion changes. Record the dates rather than relying on memory.
4. Check measurement changes
Did the reporting window change? Was a profile moved into a group? Was a website URL updated? Did the phone number change? Could the newest reporting be incomplete? Check the source system before concluding that demand changed.
Example
A hypothetical café sees profile views decline 8%, website clicks decline 6%, and directions requests decline 27%. The larger directions decline deserves its own investigation. It might relate to access, a nearby construction change, a shift in customer intent, or normal variation—but the numbers alone do not decide among those explanations.
Prioritise by evidence
Create a table with each hypothesis, evidence for it, evidence against it, and the next check. Start with low-cost verifications such as testing the website URL and checking hours. Do not immediately rewrite profile content or buy advertising without knowing what changed.
Client-ready summary
“Directions requests fell 27% in the selected period, while profile views fell 8%. The difference indicates that the decline was not uniform across these measures. We are checking location/access information and period comparability. The available report does not prove a single cause.”
