A single screenshot is not a local ranking study
Google says distance is one of the main factors in local results. A business may appear prominently to someone standing nearby and less prominently to a searcher across town. Results can also differ by query wording and device context. Therefore, a screenshot taken once from the owner’s phone cannot establish that the business “ranks number one in the city.”
Separate three measurements
Visibility observations: Which businesses appear for a defined query from a defined location and time? This is a sample, not a universal citywide position.
Website discovery: Which search queries and pages generate impressions and clicks? Search Console provides site-level search performance data for verified properties, but it is not a complete report of every Maps result.
Business outcomes: Qualified calls, direction requests, appointment bookings, quote requests and completed sales. Track outcomes separately from visibility because demand, availability, pricing and sales handling also affect them.
Create a repeatable local observation protocol
- Define 3–5 real customer queries, including service wording rather than only the brand name.
- Select a small set of relevant locations representing the actual service area. Do not describe this sample as every searcher’s experience.
- Record date, time, device/context, query, observed businesses and whether the listing is eligible/relevant.
- Repeat at a consistent interval, for example monthly, and annotate major business changes.
- Track calls and bookings using a consistent method that respects customer privacy.
If using a rank-tracking vendor, document its grid size, sampling locations, query set and update frequency. Treat the output as a directional monitoring tool, not a direct view of Google’s entire ranking system.
Report what the data can support
Good: “For four sampled queries across six observation points, the business appeared in the visible local results at three points this month, compared with two in the previous sample.”
Not supported: “The business ranks third across the whole city” based on one grid or screenshot.
Avoid claiming that an observed change was caused by one post, one photo or a single profile edit unless a credible comparison supports that conclusion. Google does not disclose the full algorithm and states that local ranking mainly uses relevance, distance and prominence.
A compact monthly report
| Measure | Record | Decision it informs |
|---|---|---|
| Sampled visibility | Queries, points, date | Where to investigate discoverability |
| Search Console | Queries, pages, clicks, impressions | Which site content is being discovered |
| Enquiries | Qualified calls/messages | Whether discovery creates demand |
| Conversion | Bookings / qualified enquiries | Whether the journey is working |
A defensible report explains the method and uncertainty. That builds more trust than a confident but unrepresentative ranking claim.
