A funnel can help a local business organise metrics from discovery to outcome. But do not assume that every row counts the same people or that the available tools link every stage together.

A useful measurement model

Discovery indicators → platform actions → website activity → recorded enquiry → qualified outcome

  • Discovery: profile views, Search Console impressions.
  • Platform actions: website clicks, call-button clicks, directions requests.
  • Website activity: analytics sessions and key events.
  • Enquiry: call log, form submission, booking request.
  • Outcome: qualified lead, attended appointment, completed sale.

The first two stages are often aggregate platform reports. They may not connect to later events at the individual-user level.

Assign a source to each stage

Stage Source Owner Main limitation
Discovery Business Profile / Search Console Marketing Different definitions and surfaces
Action Business Profile performance Marketing Click/request is not always completion
Website Analytics Web/marketing Depends on tagging and collection
Enquiry Phone, form, booking, CRM Operations Duplicate and missed records
Outcome Sales/appointment system Business owner Source attribution may be incomplete

Example

A hypothetical repair shop records 900 profile views, 75 website clicks, 58 tagged analytics sessions, 11 form submissions, and six qualified enquiries. Do not treat this as a verified path for the same 900 people. It is a sequence of aggregate counts from systems with different coverage. The ratios may be useful for internal monitoring only when their definitions are stated.

How to improve the funnel

  1. Ensure the profile destination URL works.
  2. Test website analytics and key events.
  3. Use a consistent form and lead-source workflow.
  4. Deduplicate enquiries using a defined rule.
  5. Ask staff to classify lead quality consistently.
  6. Keep “unknown source” as an allowed value.
  7. Review where the measurement chain breaks before trying to optimise it.

What a funnel cannot prove by itself

A chart showing lower counts at each stage does not prove that the same individuals dropped out at each stage. Nor does an increase at the top prove more revenue. A funnel is a reporting framework, not automatically a person-level journey or causal model.

Sources

Next step: Build the funnel around your actual business outcome and annotate where the data sources cannot be joined reliably.
