Quick answer

Opening perspective

A promotion can be mathematically correct in one system and misleading in another. An ad may show a discount against an outdated reference price, a product page may display a different offer, or a checkout may omit a condition that appeared in the creative. Price claims need a common evidence trail from source data through customer-facing surfaces.

Identify the reference price and its meaning

For each offer, document whether the comparison is against a previous selling price, a recommended retail price, a bundle price, or another approved benchmark. These concepts are not interchangeable. The business should verify the applicable rules for the markets in which the promotion appears and avoid implying a price history that the records cannot support. Store the evidence and the decision behind the chosen comparison.

Trace the number through every surface

List ads, marketplace listings, product detail pages, category tiles, email, social posts, affiliate feeds, printed material, and checkout. Record which system supplies the price and how quickly each surface updates. A content-management field may not be the source of truth if pricing is controlled by commerce software. The audit should follow the value through integrations rather than assuming the same number was copied correctly everywhere.

Check discount arithmetic and conditions

Validate the displayed amount, percentage, currency, rounding method, tax treatment, eligible variants, minimum spend, coupon requirement, and promotion window. Percentage calculations can differ when the reference price changes or rounding is applied at different stages. Test the final customer payable amount, not only the headline badge. Where an offer applies to selected products, ensure the visual design does not suggest universal eligibility.

Control start and end timing

Set the promotion's effective time zone and define when each channel should publish or withdraw the offer. Scheduled posts, cached pages, affiliate feeds, and email cannot always be changed instantly. Plan the end-of-promotion state and confirm what happens to customers who began checkout before expiry. Avoid leaving a discount badge visible after the underlying eligibility rule has ended.

Use an evidence pack

Retain the approved reference-price source, calculation, terms, affected SKUs, creative versions, approval, effective dates, and test results. Make it possible for a reviewer to reproduce the claim. If the price changes during the campaign, create a new version rather than silently overwriting the original record. Evidence should be understandable to someone who did not participate in the launch.

Test awkward cases

Include sale items with variants, out-of-stock products, bundles, coupon stacking, subscription prices, regional currencies, and mobile layouts. Test whether the discount remains accurate after a customer changes quantity or selects another size. Confirm that structured data or product feeds do not publish a different price from the visible page.

Manage exceptions and corrections

If an incorrect price is discovered, pause the affected claim where possible, preserve evidence, correct the source of truth, and verify every downstream surface. Decide how to handle customers who saw or acted on the incorrect display with the appropriate legal and customer-service teams. Record the incident and the control failure rather than treating the correction as a routine copy edit.

Release checklist

Before launch, confirm the reference-price definition, supporting records, arithmetic, offer conditions, channel inventory, timing, variant behaviour, and checkout total. After expiry, verify that the campaign has returned to the intended standard-price state. A discount claim should be reproducible from evidence, not justified by the fact that a badge has already been designed.

Final release gate

A price promotion is ready only when the evidence for its comparison price is available, every live surface has been checked, the final payable amount is correct, and a named owner can withdraw or correct the offer. If any of those conditions is unknown, delay the claim or narrow its scope.
