Quick answer

Use your own real photos, resize and compress them (WebP, mostly under ~200 KB), give each file a descriptive name (kaju-katli-sweet-shop-indore.webp), write alt text that describes the image naturally for someone who can't see it ("Fresh kaju katli arranged on a silver tray at Sharma Sweets, Indore"), put images near related text with a short caption, and set width and height. Upload the same real photos to your Google Business Profile. Don't stuff keywords into alt text or use stock photos as your "shop".

Photos sell local businesses. People want to see the food, the clinic, the finished work and the team before they visit. Optimised images help those photos appear in Google Images, support your page rankings and make your site faster.

Why image SEO matters locally

  • Google Images and visual search: people browse images for food, décor, salons and products.
  • Context for Google: images with good alt text and captions help Google understand your page.
  • Accessibility: screen readers read alt text for visually impaired users.
  • Speed: properly sized images keep pages fast (speed guide).
  • Trust: real photos convert better than stock.

Real photos vs stock photos

Real photos Stock photos
Trust High — customers recognise your place Low — looks generic
Uniqueness Unique to you Same images on many sites
Local relevance Shows your actual area and team Often foreign settings
SEO value Original content Little value

Stock images are fine for abstract backgrounds, but never present a stock photo as your shop, team or work. See our phone photography tips to take good photos yourself.

File names

Before uploading, rename files from "IMG_20261012_183045.jpg" to something descriptive:

  • bridal-makeup-kothrud-pune.webp
  • root-canal-treatment-room-dental-clinic.webp
  • ac-gas-refill-technician-ahmedabad.webp

Use lowercase, hyphens between words, and keep it short. Don't repeat the same name on every image.

Alt text: how to write it

Good alt text describes what's in the image, in a natural sentence, with context where relevant.

Formula: what it is + key detail + where (if natural)

Industry Weak alt text Good alt text
Sweet shop "sweets" "Fresh kaju katli on a silver tray at Sharma Sweets, Indore"
Salon "salon salon best salon pune" "Stylist giving a layered haircut at Kavya Salon in Kothrud"
Dental clinic "image1" "Modern dental chair and X-ray unit in the treatment room"
Restaurant "food" "Thali with paneer butter masala, dal, rice and rotis"
Hardware "shop" "Shelves of pipes, taps and fittings inside the hardware store"
Gym "gym photo" "Members training on treadmills in the cardio section"

Rules:

  • Be specific and honest.
  • Include your business name or area only when it's naturally part of the description.
  • Don't stuff keywords or repeat phrases.
  • Keep it to a sentence or so.
  • Decorative images (patterns, dividers) can have empty alt text.

Size and format

  • Resize to the maximum display size (often 1200–1600 px wide for big images, smaller for thumbnails).
  • Use WebP or AVIF where supported; JPEG for photos otherwise; PNG for logos with transparency or SVG for vector logos.
  • Compress — most photos can be well under 200 KB without visible loss.
  • Set width and height attributes to prevent layout shift.
  • Lazy-load images below the first screen.

Context: captions and placement

Google looks at text around an image. Place images next to the related content and add a short caption when helpful:

Our Diwali gift boxes are packed fresh every morning in our Vijay Nagar kitchen.

Captions are read more than body text — use them to reinforce your message.

Image structured data and sitemaps

  • If you use LocalBusiness schema, include your logo and an image property pointing to a real photo.
  • Many website platforms include images in sitemaps automatically; check Search Console for indexing issues.
  • Use descriptive page titles; images inherit context from the page.

Google Business Profile photos

Images on your Google profile matter even more for local search than website images:

  • Upload the same real, high-quality photos — exterior, interior, team, products, work.
  • Add new photos regularly; fresh photos signal an active business.
  • Follow the photo size guide and photo checklist.
  • Don't add text overlays or watermarks to profile photos meant to show your place.

Note that Google ignores alt text and file names on profile uploads; quality and relevance of the photo itself are what count there.

AI images and honesty

AI-generated images can be useful for promotional graphics, but customers should not be misled about your premises, products or results. See AI photos and Google profile rules.

Quick audit checklist

  • Every important image is a real, recent photo.
  • File names are descriptive.
  • Alt text is written for every meaningful image.
  • Images are resized and compressed.
  • Width and height are set.
  • Images sit beside related text.
  • Logo is crisp (SVG or high-resolution PNG).
  • The same photo set is uploaded to your Google profile.

Frequently asked questions

Does alt text help Google Maps ranking?

Not directly. Maps ranking depends on your Business Profile. Alt text helps your website pages and images in Search.

Should I add my city to every alt text?

No. Add location only when it's natural and true to the image; repetition looks like stuffing.

Can I use photos from Google Maps on my website?

Only your own photos. Customer-uploaded photos belong to the customers; ask permission before reusing them.

What size should my homepage hero image be?

Usually around 1600 px wide, compressed to a small file, with a mobile version if your platform supports it.

Are WebP images supported everywhere?

All modern browsers support WebP. Most website builders convert images automatically.
